10-Month-Old Has Been Named The World’s Fattest Baby, But A Diagnosis Still Hasn’t Been Found

When you’re pregnant and have a human being growing inside you, complications can arise very easily. There is a great deal of pressure and responsibility that comes with pregnancy.

As a soon-to-be-mother, you are constantly aware that you’re carrying a delicate and fragile little life inside your own body. And particularly if the unborn baby is your very first child, you strive to do everything you can to ensure that he or she is healthy and safe. Sometimes pregnancies go relatively smoothly, in spite of the horror stories that are often spouted about morning sickness and severe mood swings. And even better than that, sometimes the birth goes much better than you ever anticipated. And then you can rejoice in the fact that you now have a healthy child to care for and love. But unfortunately, this can lull you into a false sense of security if all your luck suddenly changes directly after the birth of your little one. This is exactly what happened to Isabel Pantoja and her partner, Mario Gonzalez who live in Tecoman in the western state of Colima, Mexico. They are parents of a 10-month-old baby boy who weighs a whopping 66lbs! This is about the same weight of an average nine-year-old child. Their baby is called Luis Manuel and to say that he has grown rapidly since his birth would be an understatement. In fact, his waistline had expanded so dramatically that when he was only a month old, he had to be dressed in clothing fit for a two-year-old. Luis’ parents have been overfeeding him due to his constant hunger, but the truth of the matter is, his hunger is totally insatiable. There is very little his parents can do to pacify their baby when he cries out of hunger. Parents of babies tend to expect that if their little one is crying to be fed, then this must stem from an instinctual need to eat when he or she is genuinely in need of food. It is highly likely, considering how extreme the child’s weight is, that Luis is the world’s fattest baby. However, there aren’t enough records of other overweight babies that can confirm this stat. The thing is, Luis seemed to be in perfect health when he was born and weighed in at a perfectly healthy 7lbs 11oz. However, according to his mother Isabel Pantoja, it all went downhill very soon after his birth. Medical professionals have shown concern for the child who, despite appearances, is still very much a baby. He has undergone many tests with the sole purpose of diagnosing his condition. Doctors are convinced that the baby has Prader-Willi syndrome. As of yet, his symptoms appear to tick all the boxes. The baby’s father, Mario Gonzalez, expressed his fears that the condition could cause serious issues for his baby boy.

“In some cases, kids have died because of a heart attack due to being so overweight,” Gonzalez explained. “All help given for him, small or big, is good for him.”

The genetic disorder is caused when certain genes in the body malfunction causing those with the illness to be in a permanent state of hunger.

Being afflicted with the condition will almost certainly lead to obesity and often type 2 diabetes.

Unfortunately, for his family, the condition is incurable and has been known to cause heart attacks in very young children. The condition also leads to restricted height growth and reduced muscle tone. This doesn’t leave much hope for Luis, who seems to be suffering from the condition to a substantial degree. To make matters worse, his family are living in poverty so cannot afford sufficient treatment for their son. The family believe that Luis is indeed suffering from Prader-Willi syndrome, otherwise his extreme weight gain would be completely inexplicable. They have started a fundraising project in order to raise enough money so that they will eventually be able to afford the best medical treatment for their baby boy. It is estimated that treatment (which would consist of a number of hormone injections) could come up to about $530. Luis’ mother Isabel talks about the concerns she had soon after her son’s birth:

“After only one month we noticed that clothes did not fit him and we had to dress him in clothes for a one-year-old, and even a two-year-old. We saw our baby gain weight so fast. Sometimes, he could not sleep because he felt like he was suffocating due to his weight.”

It certainly isn’t easy being parents of an unwell child, especially if you don’t have the means to be able to cope with the implications. Their current financial situation is such that they cannot even begin to think about pulling out $530 from their own pockets. In fact, they have even opened a bank account to allow people to donate money towards their son’s treatment. Unfortunately, there are babies all over the world that are in dire need of medical help. Take a look at this very heartbreaking video about a baby boy whose condition was so severe that he needed heart surgery.
